A new rumor suggests Nintendo and Illumination are hard at work on adaptations of Luigi’s Mansion, Doney Kong, Zelda, and more!

After the mega-success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, it’s no secret that Nintendo and Illumination are looking to maximize their partnership by adapting more classic Nintendo properties for the silver screen. While several ideas exist in the online ether, Daniel Richtman, who has a solid track record for sharing information that often pans out, says Nintendo and Illumination are working on various titles. In a new post linked to Richtman’s Patreon, he says the team that gave us an excellent Super Mario Bros. movie is hard at work on adaptations of The Legend of ZeldaLuigi’s MansionDonkey Kong, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2. Please keep in mind that this information is merely a rumor. Do not accept it as gospel.

While Super Mario Bros. 2 is a no-brainer after the original banked over $1 billion at the worldwide box office, adaptations of Luigi’s MansionThe Legend of Zelda, and Donkey Kong could be risky ventures, even for a brand as legendary as Nintendo. Although Luigi is a fan-favorite character, his popularity is arguably less than his brother Mario. Kids and adults enjoyed Luigi’s contribution to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, but he played a much smaller role than most characters in the film. Can the lanky plumber carry a movie of his own? Speaking as someone who proudly places Luigi’s Mansion in his Top 5 Games of All Time list, I hope so!

Meanwhile, Donkey Kong is almost guaranteed to star in a new movie. DK stole the show for many people in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. With a bankable star already attached to the role (Seth Rogen), a Donkey Kong movie starring DK, Diddy Kong, Dixie Kong, and Cranky Kong could yield plenty of bananas at the box office. If Nintendo brings the Donkey Kong Country villain King K. Rool into the mix, we could be in for a grand jungle adventure.

Last but certainly not least, we have The Legend of Zelda. An adaptation of Link’s adventures through Hyrule has been teased multiple times in the past several years, including a rumored project at Netflix and a live-action movie starring Tom Holland as the hero who wields the fabled Master Sword. While I think there are better studios to adapt The Legend of Zelda for the silver screen than Illumination, Zelda fans would freak out if this project got an official announcement. I see the Koroks as a vehicle for Minions-like humor. Still, I’d want Nintendo to keep the tone relatively dark with a touch of whimsy.

What do you think about Nintendo and Illumination teaming up for The Legend of ZeldaLuigi’s MansionDonkey Kong, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2? Keep in mind that this information is a rumor for the time being. That said, let your imagination run wild. Who would you cast as Link? Should he have a speaking role in the film? Who would voice Princess Zelda? Please feel free to sound off in the comments below.
