Colossal Raises Over $768K Benefiting The Skatepark Project

In an electrifying display of skill, passion, and camaraderie, the global skateboarding community united under the banner of Colossal's Tony Hawk's Skatepark Hero. This extraordinary online competition wasn't merely a showcase of tricks, but a celebration of creativity, purpose, and philanthropy.

Grand Prize Winner

The "People's Choice" winner, selected by public voting,  was Michael Manion, a lifelong skateboarder who discovered a passion for helping open skateparks within his local community in Southern Georgia. Manion looks up to Hawk as someone who paved the way for him to do what he loves. Just like Hawk, who blazed a trail for skateboarders worldwide, Manion's dedication to taking the title exemplifies the profound impact skateboarding can have on individuals and communities.

Also Pretty Awesome

Robert Zamora secured the coveted "Tony's Pick" title. Hawk himself plucked Zamora from the ranks of contenders, captivated not only by the technical finesse of his boardslide trick but also by the artful synchronization of his moves to a perfectly curated musical backdrop. Zamora's attention to detail and artistic flair captured the essence of the competition's spirit, highlighting how skateboarding transcends the physical and becomes an art form that resonates deeply.

The Donation

Skatepark Hero was a fundraiser powered by Colossal, a global leader in modern giving. The competition raised a staggering $768,498.50, ultimately being granted to support The Skatepark Project, a nonprofit near and dear to Tony Hawk's heart since 2002. The organization's mission is to help underserved communities create safe and inclusive public skateparks for youth.

The competition served as a fundraising campaign for DTCare, a United States 501(c)(3) public charity organization, which granted donations to The Skatepark Project.

About The Skatepark Project

Founded by Tony Hawk, The Skatepark Project (TSP) is a nonprofit organization working to increase access to outdoor recreation and free play through the creation of safe and inclusive community skateparks. TSP provides the resources, advocacy skills, grants and fellowship programs that guide skaters in creating their own community skateparks, from conception through construction. This is a collaborative process between skaters and city authorities to invest in capital improvements that will enrich a community for decades. The Skatepark Project's grant programs have awarded over $11 million to help fund nearly 700 public skateparks in all 50 states, enjoyed by an estimated eight million people annually. The organization's International Program has provided technical and financial support to assist youth through the Skateistan educational programs in Afghanistan, Cambodia, and South Africa. Rivers are Life Premieres ‘Wings of the Oder’ Bringing Awareness to Poland’s Oder River

Tomorrow, August 19, Rivers are Life unveils the latest documentary highlighting the Oder River and conservation efforts made by local River Hero, Piotr Chara. Located in central Europe, the Oder River is Poland's second longest river, which runs from the Czech Republic, through Poland and Germany, and into the Baltic Sea. This film, titled "Wings of the Oder," centers on Piotr and his mission to protect the Oder and surrounding wildlife habitats while inspiring people locally and around the world.

Piotr Chara spent most of his childhood in and around the Oder River and its shores. As he grew older and continued to watch, Piotr noticed a dramatic decline in the river and the local wildlife that called it home. Unintended consequences from a river widening project and the effects of climate change have played into the situation and negatively impacted the once thriving shores' delicate ecosystem.

Various species of Wetland birds are native to this area, such as little terns and oystercatchers. The number of birds migrating to the river were decreasing in high numbers due to difficulty nesting - their habitats were compromised which made them easy prey for local predators in the area. Piotr researched different solutions and created an organization that builds floating nests for the birds to be able to breed safely and comfortably.

"The plight of these birds didn't allow me to rest. I admired their beauty, their grace, their mating dances," said Piotr Chara. "I was eventually able to recognize individual birds, to become familiar with their temperament and personal habits. I felt honored. It was all the more painful, then, to see their dramatic situation. I knew it was imperative to find the time, find a solution and resources to help them."

To date, Piotr's team has installed eight artificial nests to help the at-risk birds. Now an award-winning photographer, Piotr films the birds as part of his studies and reports his findings to The Green Valley of the Oder and Warta (ZDOW) Foundation. Since filming on this project began, Piotr and his loyal volunteers, along with The Green Valley of the Oder and the Warta (ZDOW) Foundation, worked together to officially achieve reservation status for the Oder River. This status will protect the river from any potential human threats, providing a thriving breeding ground for wildlife for years to come.

"Wings of the Oder" premieres August 19 and will be a reminder for just how essential our rivers are to communities and ecosystems across the globe.

In the lead-up to Mother's Day 2023, Seattle plastic surgeon Dr. Javad Sajan's practice, Allure Esthetic Plastic Surgery, collected donations for mothers experiencing homelessness in the community. This included physical donations in the office and monetary donations directly to the Zera Foundation, the partnering nonprofit organization.

With collection boxes at all three locations, Dr. Sajan offered five free units of Botox to anyone who donated two or more items to the drive. Allure Esthetic frequently works with the 501c3 nonprofit, the Zera Foundation to make a difference in the lives of families in transition and underprivileged populations.

In a video about the fundraiser, Javad Sajan, MD says, "We're so excited to partner with our community to help people who are going through a difficult transition in life." Allure Esthetic also hosts other fundraising events throughout the year such as a Thanksgiving Food Drive and School Supplies Drive.

On July 22nd, Dr. Sajan hand-delivered the donations to Mary's Place, a shelter and organization that supports women and families, in Seattle. The donations consisted of diapers, wipes, and other items necessary for mothers and children of all ages. All donations stay within the community and uplift women and children in need.
