Undefeated clubs to clash Thursday

The Napanee Raiders and Picton Pirates will be playing for early-season bragging rights on Thursday night after each team picked up a pair of wins in Week 2 of Provincial Junior Hockey League action this past week, extending their unblemished won-lost records to 3-0.

The Raiders downed the Campbellford Rebels 7-2 on Saturday night and the Frankford Huskies 6-1 on Friday night, while the Pirates doubled the Port Hope Panthers 4-2 on Saturday and edged the Rebels 5-4 last Thursday night.

The two 3-0 teams will clash at the Prince Edward Community Centre this Thursday in a 7:30 p.m. puck drop.

In the only other game this past week, the Amherstview Jets improved to 2-1 by stopping Frankford 6-1 on Saturday night.

Six different players scored goal for the Raiders in their Saturday win, in which they outshot the Rebels 53-26, including 20-3 in the third period.

After Benny Scarr gave Campbellford a 1-0 lead with the only goal of the first period, Napanee went to work, scoring twice in the opening 68 seconds of the second period. Chris Edwards, with his first of two goals in the game, and Matthew Sheehy, assisted by Edwards, made it 2-1 for the Raiders.

Napanee emerged from the second period with a 3-2 lead and netted four unanswered third-period goals to pull away. Beckett Palmer-Stephen, Noah Westwater, Soren Zamuner and Ben White also scored for the Raiders, while Dennis Fisher was Campbellford’s other scorer.

On Friday night, the Raiders received two goals from Ben Chubbs and singles from Ethan Williams, Maverick Labrie, Logan White and Johnny Wright, with Connor Gilligan picking on Frankford’s lone goal.

Picton, meanwhile, scored twice in the second half of the third period to snap a 2-2 tie and give it the wins over Port Hope on Saturday. Noah Brant and Landon McLellan did the scoring for the Pirates, with a goal apiece in each of the first and third periods. Replying for Port Hope with second-period markers were Logan Kelly and Will Perley-Fry.

On Thursday night, after being outscored 2-1 by Campbellford 2-1 in the first period, the Pirates scored the next three goals — two in the second and one early in the third — to take a 4-2 advantage and they held on for the win. McLellan scored twice, with Cole Stevenson, Owen Dever and Nolan Dawson netting the others. Scarr, Josh Sainthill, Connor MacGregor and Ethan Salter replied for the Rebels.

Wrapping up the week, Amherstview scored three goals in each of the second and third period to stop Frankford. Mathieu Halle, with two goals and an assist, and Elliott Belzile and Zackery McMahon, with a goal and two assists each, paced the Jets with three points apiece. Brendon O’Brien and Owen Bauder also scored for the Jets. Caleb Summerfeldt counted Frankford’s lone goal.
